I had to get a crown and decided to go with the CEREC crown because it meant only one appointment. But, the crown ended up not matching my teeth. Is that because they’re CEREC? If so, I think it would be more worth it to match and do two appointments. Can I switch?
Tilly A.
Dear Tilly,
CEREC Crowns are made out of a single block of porcelain.
The problem isn’t the CEREC crown, though honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them for a front tooth. In those cases I’d do a traditional porcelain crown. They can be made to match your natural teeth if your dentist has the cosmetic skill to do it. While they can be switched, you shouldn’t expect better results. Not if you use the same dentist.
In your situation, if the crown bothers you, I’d switch dentists. You want one who’s made the effort to receive the additional training needed to create a beautiful smile. Dental school isn’t enough. It requires artistry, not just technical understanding.
Don’t hesitate to ask a dentist about their cosmetic training. You can also look at their before and after images of cases they’ve done to get an idea of how beautiful their work turns out. Don’t feel like you’re being pushy. These are your teeth. We’re often judged by our smiles, so it’s important yours turns out properly. You need to know the dentist you go to has the ability to do that for you.
