I feel like I’m the absolute pickiest patient in the world. Most people want nice white shiny teeth. But, mine are so shiny I feel like they look fake. They’re almost blindingly shiny and not just because of the white color. It’s because of the shine. To me it makes it obvious they’re not natural. My dentist thinks I’m nitpicking. I don’t want to be difficult I just want a smile I’m proud of. What do you recommend? Should I just be satisfied or is there really something off?
I wish I had a picture of your smile makeover. It would make it easier to tell. However, I think I have some idea of what could be going on here. I want you to look at the smile I’m posting below and notice something. While the teeth do have that natural translucent shine, the texture is irregular. One of these teeth isn’t real, but the cosmetic dentist did such a great job you can’t tell which one.
The younger we are, the more texture our teeth have. Some of it tends to wear off as we get older. However, they still have texture. This is important. The glaze on your porcelain veneers is important also. It’s what helps it look translucent and keeps it stain free.
You are likely dealing with an inexperienced cosmetic dentist. One mistake they make is by making the glaze too flat. Without that texture, there is no shadowing and the teeth end up too shiny. This will make them look fake. That may be what you’re experiencing.
One thing I”m curious about is your dentist’s response. Nitpicking? Even if you were, and I’m not sure you are, his job is to create a beautiful smile for you. He hasn’t done that.
You could remove the glaze on them, but while they would certainly be less shiny, they would begin to pick up stains very quickly without that protection.
Your best bet is to go back and ask the dentist to re-do them. This time, make sure he tries then on with a temporary try-in paste and allows you to look at them in various lightings before you have them bonded. Your other option, if you don’t think he can get it right, is to ask for a refund. You may only get a partial refund, but it is worth a shot. Then, you can have a skilled cosmetic dentist re-do your case.
If you go that route, my suggestion is to get an AACD accredited dentist. These are the top cosmetic dentists in the country and can give you a stunning smile. You can find them at aacd.com. Just make sure in the “find a cosmetic dentist” link, you check you want accredited dentists.
