I have a twenty year old daughter who has impacted wisdom teeth. The dentist mentioned one of them is under the bone. Will this type of extraction require anesthesia? I will be honest and tell you that idea terrifies me. I don’t want her in pain, but don’t want her at risk either.

Dear Minnie,
Sleep dentistry changes lives
Unless there is something more complicated about her case than what you have mentioned to me here, I do not think she will require anesthesia. At her age, the bone is pliable. Not only that, but there has not been enough time for the cementum to accumulate at the roots of her teeth. This makes the extraction rather uneventful for her. That being said, she will want a little more than a local anesthetic.
My recommendation is you find a sedation dentist and use oral conscious sedation. This is administered with a simple pill. As simple as it is to take, the medication itself is quite powerful. In fact, your daughter will need you to drive her to and from her dental appointment as well as stay with her for a few hours after the procedure until she is lucid and steady on her feet again. It is quite safe. While she is still conscious during the procedure, your daughter will be completely relaxed. In fact, she will likely sleep through the entire procedure. I would just plan on setting her up a little sleep space on the couch and let her stream her favorite movie or television series.
I hope this puts your mind at ease.
