Too Afraid to Go to Dentist

Posted on June 30, 2020 by writeradmin.

I feel like something is wrong with me. I know I need to go to the dentist. I want a healthy smile. Yet, somehow when it comes down to it I just can’t make myself actually go. Do you know of a way to fix this?

Megan

Dear Megan,

Someone hiding behind a chair frightened.

There isn’t anything wrong with you. Believe me when I say many patients struggle with dental anxiety. Some allow it to cripple them, destroying their teeth and their health, by only going in when there is a dental emergency. You are doing the opposite. Knowing your struggle, you are reaching out for a solution. I’m glad you did because I have fantastic news for you.

Dental Sedation: The Solution to Dental Anxiety

One thing that has worked for many patients in your situation is dental sedation. Most dentists who use sedation offer two levels:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Oral Conscious Sedation

Your level of anxiety generally determines which one is the best option for you.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous is the mildest form of sedation. It’s administered by a nosepiece that allows you to breathe in the gas. It gives you a relaxed, floaty feel. Then, when your procedure is done, your dentist will switch the gas back to oxygen. In just a few moments you are ready to get on with your day as normal.

Oral Conscious Seation

This is for patients with a more severe anxiety level. It is administered by a pill. However, it is so strong you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment as well as stay with you until you are lucid and steady on your feet again.

Most patients completely sleep through their appointment when given this level of sedation. There is an added benefit. If you have a lot of dental work to do because you’ve been away for a while, this allows the dentist to get more done in each sitting, thereby lowering the number of appointments needed.

Again, don’t feel bad about your anxiety. Give one or both of these options a try. I feel confident you will be able to go to the dentist again with little to no worries.
